How to choose the appropriate screen size and viewing distance according to the projector's throw ratio

For many novice friends who are exposed to projection for the first time, they will face a very difficult question after purchasing a projector. What size of projection screen should be selected and how far should it be installed from the screen? So how to choose? Let's take a look at how to choose!

 

What is Projector Throw Ratio

Throw ratio affects how big a picture you can project: Literally, throw ratio is related to the distance from the wall. Throw ratio refers to the ratio of the projection distance to the projected screen width when the projector has a clear image.
The value, in simple terms, is how much screen can be projected at a distance of how many meters. The calculation formula is A1A2/D1D2, as shown in the figure above.

If the projection ratio is 2:1, then you need to be 2 meters away from the wall to project a 1 meter long screen.
So if you want to project a larger picture in a smaller room, you should choose a projector with a smaller projection ratio as much as possible.


Throw ratio of different types of projectors:

  • The projection ratio of ordinary projectors is usually between 1.5-1.9,
  • When the throw ratio is less than 1, we usually call it a short focal lens,
  • When the throw ratio is below 0.4, we usually call it an ultra-short-throw lens.

 

For example, the projection ratio of Fengmi/Formovie 4K Max Ultra Short Throw Laser Projector is 0.252:1. The projector only needs to be 0.252 meters away from the wall to project a 1-meter-long picture on the wall. The projection ratio is less than 0.4, which is ultra-short. focus lens

Therefore, in a small room, it is best to only use a projector with a smaller projection ratio.


Viewing distance for different screen sizes:

This is everyone's biggest concern: the best viewing distance for projectors and different screen sizes. This viewing is actually to choose a suitable viewing position to make the eyes more comfortable. Generally, it is recommended to use a 16:9 or 16:10 screen for home use. If the viewing distance is 100 inches, it is about 3 meters, and 120 inches is 3.5 to 4 meters, and the eyes will be more comfortable.
