How to choose the appropriate screen size and viewing distance according to the projector's throw ratio

by ZhouQiaoli 22 Aug 2022 0 Comments

For many novice friends who are exposed to projection for the first time, they will face a very difficult question after purchasing a projector. What size of projection screen should be selected and how far should it be installed from the screen? So how to choose? Let's take a look at how to choose!

What is Projector Throw Ratio

Throw ratio affects how big a picture you can project: Literally, throw ratio is related to the distance from the wall. Throw ratio refers to the ratio of the projection distance to the projected screen width when the projector has a clear image.
The value, in simple terms, is how much screen can be projected at a distance of how many meters. The calculation formula is A1A2/D1D2, as shown in the figure above.

If the projection ratio is 2:1, then you need to be 2 meters away from the wall to project a 1 meter long screen.
So if you want to project a larger picture in a smaller room, you should choose a projector with a smaller projection ratio as much as possible.

Throw ratio of different types of projectors:

  • The projection ratio of ordinary projectors is usually between 1.5-1.9,
  • When the throw ratio is less than 1, we usually call it a short focal lens,
  • When the throw ratio is below 0.4, we usually call it an ultra-short-throw lens.

For example, the projection ratio of Fengmi/Formovie 4K Max Ultra Short Throw Laser Projector is 0.252:1. The projector only needs to be 0.252 meters away from the wall to project a 1-meter-long picture on the wall. The projection ratio is less than 0.4, which is ultra-short. focus lens

Therefore, in a small room, it is best to only use a projector with a smaller projection ratio.

Viewing distance for different screen sizes:

This is everyone's biggest concern: the best viewing distance for projectors and different screen sizes. This viewing is actually to choose a suitable viewing position to make the eyes more comfortable. Generally, it is recommended to use a 16:9 or 16:10 screen for home use. If the viewing distance is 100 inches, it is about 3 meters, and 120 inches is 3.5 to 4 meters, and the eyes will be more comfortable.

But! ! Also need to take into account the size of the room
